A BRIEF HISTORY
During 1957 the Russians were the first to put a satellite into space, this then set off the 'Space Race' in which the USA and the USSR competed with each other to make the first lunar landing. During this time the US government put much funding into the 'space race' with the orginisation called NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) being formed, this orginisation was devoted to their task, getting a man on to the moon before the Russians. With the launch of SPUTNIK the threat of nuclear war become an important factor in the minds of the US what would happen if there were a nuclear war? How would they communicate? The idea came from the extensive road building scheme in the 1950's where in the name of national defense, the government underwrote the total cost of building an interstate to link there by allowing the military to reinforce any front that might be under attack.
By the late 1960's with the highway system up and running the military attentions turned to the security of it's intelligence. The idea was to have mainframe computers at set strategic locations and have unlimited communications routes in case a bomb attack took out one location the information would still flow, there would be no center of communications.
